Three Commonly Known Facts about Education
Modern society gives much value to education. In fact, it is so important that in many cultures, educational attainment it is a major determining factor of social status. It only makes sense that many, if not all, parents desire to send their children to the best possible institutions of learning such as Future Generation Early Learning Center, a childhood learning center in Bloomfield New Jersey. Below we outline some facts about the status of education around the world based on a 2012 report by the UN.
1. Many adults are illiterate
The United Nations estimates that 775 million adults are illiterate. Of this, around 500 million are women. According to the Education For All Global Monitoring Report’s World Inequality Database on Education (WIDE), in at least 63 countries, poor young girls are statistically significantly less educated than poor young boys. If these children remain uneducated, the cycle of illiteracy will continue.
2. Many children are illiterate
More than 250 million children cannot read, write or count well. This is perhaps related to the fact that more than 60 million children of age appropriate for primary school are not in school. A little less than half of these children are in poor countries involved in or affected by conflict.
3. Education investment leads to economic growth
According to the Education For All Global Monitoring Report 2012, evidence suggests that every US dollar invested in education translates into 10 dollars worth of economic growth. Furthermore, in low-income countries, there is evidence that a boost of two-per cent in the annual economic growth may result from providing all children with quality basic education. Moreover, it is estimated that an additional year in school increases a woman’s income by 10 to 20 per cent.
